How to Reduce Bruising After Dermal Fillers?

Unlike other treatments, dermal fillers are non-invasive and they also have the least downtime period. Unfortunately, less downtime doesn’t mean no side effects. A patient undergoing the procedure is likely to experience side effects like bruising.

So what can you do to reduce bruising after your dermal filler treatments? Bruising is one of the most common side effects which is caused by the penetration of the injection needle against the skin. You may reduce bruising through enough preparation, appropriate aftercare habits, and adherence to the care instructions provided by your aesthetics provider.

What Causes Bruising After Dermal Filler Treatments?

There are cases when there seem to be no side effects after some injection needles puncture the skin. But the moment those needles try to break into the skin surface, that area is considered bruised. So it may not be visible, but injection sites are bruised from the procedure.

Bruises are small incidents of hematoma. As the injection penetrates the skin, your veins (a type of blood vessel) get punctured and its contents are leaked into the tissues, causing a slight discoloration around the area.

After your lip filler and tear trough filler injections, you should expect more bruising and swelling. Treatment areas that are most susceptible to bruising and swelling are the lip area and tear trough area because there are more veins around these areas of the face that are quite difficult to avoid.

The side effects of the dermal filler injection treatments don't only occur during filler injection procedures, but also during Botox treatment and any other procedures involving needle penetration on the skin. These are perfectly normal and manageable at home as long as you follow simple care instructions after your dermal filler injection treatments.

Is It Normal to Have Bruises After Treatment?

Yes, it’s normal to have bruises after filler injection treatments as this is a perfectly normal bodily response to any procedure that punctures the skin. Even aesthetic procedures that involve cosmetic injections like Botox injection treatments, or medical procedures that use injection, may result in some bruising.

It’s safe to expect some mild to moderate bruising after your dermal filler procedure. Even if you’re using hyaluronic acid fillers or other injectable treatment procedures that claim to create less bruising, you should still be prepared to see and remediate any bruising. The severity and possibility of bruising depends on the pre-treatment preparation that you did.

On the other hand, bruising may be reduced if your plastic surgeon used the right type of needle to penetrate through the skin surface. This needle is called a “cannula”, which is commonly used to reduce the chance of having bruises during dermal filler injection treatments.

This also contains the bruising on 1 area by creating a single entry point using the needle. Since there will only be one injection site, the bruising will be contained in that single area only. Fortunately, further complications of bruising may be avoided by some care instructions provided by your plastic surgeon or through simple aftercare tips.

Dos and Don’ts To Reduce Bruising After Dermal Fillers

Bruising is one of the most common side effects after any injectable treatment or medication, but it doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t make an effort to avoid or reduce it. Shown below are the dos and don’ts to reduce bruising after dermal filler procedures:

DosDon’ts
Do apply hot and cold compressDon’t exercise
Do take arnica supplementDon’t take blood thinners
Do wait for 24 hours before applying makeupDon’t drink alcohol

1. Do: Apply Hot and Cold Compress

Applying an ice pack on the treatment area for the first few hours after your dermal filler treatment will help reduce bruising. Gently press the cold compress on your skin for a recommended period of time by your plastic surgeon. The day after your injectable treatment, remember to switch to hot compress to help facilitate the blood flow to the treatment area.

2. Do: Take Arnica Natural Supplement

Arnica is a natural remedy claimed by many to prevent bruising. This is recommended to be taken before and after an injectable treatment for best results.

3. Do: Wait 24 Hours Before Applying Makeup

Before you enhance your youthful looks with some makeup, you have to wait for at least 24 hours. Doing this would minimize your risk of infection and other complications. It also allows you to have a better view of the occurring bruises and consult it with your doctor if it seems to worsen.

4. Don’t: Exercise

Exercise disrupts the recovery of your blood vessels from the needle penetration. It also makes the bruising more visible so it is safe to refrain from exercise before and after your dermal filler treatment.

Aside from that, exercise also stimulates your metabolism. If your body metabolizes substances faster, your dermal fillers will also be broken down at a much quicker pace. Let the dermal filler treatment settle in the treatment area for some time before resuming your exercise routine. You might also want to rethink how vigorously you do your routines considering its negative effect on the injectable treatment you just had.

5. Don’t: Take Blood Thinners

This is something that’s important to take note of before and after your dermal filler treatment. Avoid taking any blood thinning medication and supplements to reduce the risk of bruising. Some of the medications and supplements that you need to avoid are the following:

  • Motrin, St John, Fish Oil
  • Aspirin and other painkillers
  • Vitamin E supplements
  • Vitamin C supplements and cream

If you are currently taking any blood thinning medication simultaneous with the procedure, you might want to consult your plastic surgeon for some advice regarding that matter.

6. Don’t: Drink Alcohol Before and After Treatment

All alcoholic beverages must be avoided regardless of their alcohol content. Alcohol dilates and widens blood vessels which increases blood flow and lowers oxygen levels. This means that consuming alcohol before the treatment would make you more prone to bruising. On the other hand, consuming alcohol would just result in even more bruising.

Refraining from alcohol before and after your dermal filler treatment is important to avoid further bruising and reduce your recovery period.

How Long Does Bruising Last After Fillers?

Bruises from the procedure usually subside within 5 to 7 days after the dermal filler treatment. It depends on the severity of the bruising after facial fillers. For example, lip filler injection is expected to result in more bruising of the treatment area than cheek filler injections. This means that the number of days that the bruising will subside may be longer for lip filler injection treatments than cheek filler treatments.
