History

Manalapan Township has a long and fascinating history dating back to its formation in 1848 when sections of Freehold Township were separated by the New Jersey State Legislature to establish both Manalapan and Marlboro Townships. The name Manalapan comes from the Lenape Indian words "manel" meaning “drinking” and "paune" meaning “good land to settle upon”. It was officially formed when sections of Freehold Township were separated by the New Jersey State Legislature to establish both Manalapan and Marlboro Townships.

Due to the township’s rich history, it’s no wonder that the Manalapan Township Committee and Manalapan Historical Committee actively work to maintain historic sites and promote public awareness of its heritage.
